WiP Wednesday 2/17 — February 17, 2010

WiP Wednesday 2/17

OK, so there’s not really a reason to do a WiP update.  Except to say that I’ve officially entered revisions round 1.

How do you people do it?  I’m at a loss for really where to begin.  Other than with the major cutting that makes me incredibly sad to do.

Oracles Promise has shed some major poundage.

The current revised word count stands at 59,788 words.

Yikes!

There’s going to be some serious re-writing, new scene adding, and plotting going on.  Right now I’m on a read-through of the manuscript following the chapter-cuts I made over the course of a couple days.  (Non-consecutive days.)

As I go, I cut words, sentences, little things that don’t mesh now that I’ve cut all those words.  I’m leaving comments in the margins where I’ve got internal dialogue.  The comments are just to tell me who is thinking what so I know if I’m head-hopping too much.  (I like to think I’m writing in 3rd omniscient.)

I figure after the read-through I’ll correct what I noticed then and be able to move from there into a second read-through.  My focus now though is on the head-hopping and scene adding.  (Chapter adding, too.)

How’s your WiP going?

WiP Wednesday 2/10 — February 10, 2010

WiP Wednesday 2/10

This last week saw a ton of progress.  Tons.

Moonrat hosted a WY@O Weekend.  I participated last Saturday and made excellent progress on my book.  I wrote close to 6000 words that day and exceeded my goal word count.

WY@O day included writing the climax of the book.  That was rather exciting to me.

Sunday and Monday I worked really hard to finish the book.  I was so close that I could taste it.

One unexpected plot detour later and I was golden.  Finished the book Monday.  (In case you missed yesterday’s announcement of the same.)  Now I’m in the “let it stew” phase.  My characters were quite demanding in the last couple of weeks.  I laid down the law on them.  My MC and two of her friends remain 10.  The one character who asked to be older, I originally capitulated and he became 16 instead of 12.  I bumped that back 2 years.  He’s now 14.

We’ll see how long my characters accept this new set of circumstances.

Statistics:

Draft 1.5 final word count: 94,452
Largest word in Wordle cloud: My MC’s name.  (Good thing.)
Words that seem to be my echoes: looked, began, around, magic, time

Don’t forget that there’s still time to ask me a question!  I’ll be answering them all on Friday.

WiP Wednesdays 2/3 — February 3, 2010

WiP Wednesdays 2/3

February already.  Time flies by, doesn’t it?

I tried so hard to finish before today’s WiP update.  But I just couldn’t do it.  Homework got in the way.

In other news, my characters seem to be taking over the story right now.  It’s crazy.

And they’re starting to make me rethink my big twist at the end of book 2, Oracles Veil.  Seriously rethinking it.  I mean, it’s just weird how much they’re taking over.  (Same character that demanded I age him four years is also the one yelling at me to reconsider the plot.)

So, yeah, that’s where I’m at right now.

Oh, and that—>; in the sidebar.  See that word count?  So dang close!

Not to mention that my MC is now demanding I age her, too.  Which would mean I’d have to age all my characters.  And that sort of messes with the dynamics of certain things in the book.  Why can’t my characters be happy being 10/11?

WiP Wednesdays 1/27 — January 27, 2010

WiP Wednesdays 1/27

Okay, so I actually did get some writing done this week.  Not so much as I would like but I did accomplish some.

There’s probably going to be a pretty major rewrite in this book’s near future.  I will reserve judgment on such until I can maybe find a reader for it.  I just don’t want to put tons of work into revising so many words that would get cut.

We’re talking cutting at least 31,000 words here with this rewrite.  At the very least.  Which is a freaking daunting prospect because I’ve worked so hard to get where I’m at.

But like I said, I’m going to reserve final judgment on the execution until I can possibly get a reader.

Other news.  One character told me he wanted to be older.  And I’ve listened.  He just aged about 4 years.  So that’ll put in some interesting dynamics between characters.

The blood pool is gone.  So is the associated body.  Now moving on to the next event.  There should be plenty of bodies by the time this trilogy is written.  (If it ever all gets written.)

Some interesting issues have arisen.  I’ll have to work harder to make them more subtle.  I don’t want to get preachy here after all.  (And I’m not really writing “literary” fiction here.  Nothing against it, but it’s not what I’m aiming for.)

So, yeah, that’s my update this week.

Tantalus Tuesday January edition — January 26, 2010

Tantalus Tuesday January edition

Holy cow.  Where did this month go?

Oh well.  It’s the last Tuesday of the month, which means it’s Tantalus Tuesday.

Here’s your excerpt.  Enjoy!

*redacted*

So, that’s it for tis month’s installment!  Tune in next time when I maybe have a different sort of excerpt.  We’ll see.

WiP Wednesdays 1/13 — January 13, 2010

WiP Wednesdays 1/13

OK, so if you follow me on Twitter or you’re my friend on Facebook, you probably saw me saying that I only had to write 750 or so words a day to finish before February rolls into town.

Um, I’m 3 days behind now.  School is just draining everything.  Am I 3 days behind?  I’m not really sure.

Maybe I’m only 2.  Yeah, it’s 2.  So I could finish on Groundhog Day.

Wouldn’t that be a fitting day to end on?  Seriously.  I could finally escape the book that wouldn’t end.  And, like Bill Murray, I’ve been stuck in the book that won’t end for years.

Or am I thinking Lambchop’s Singalong?

Whatever.

On to the updates.  Let’s see, I finished a chapter.  I’ve moved into another.  There’ll be this one and then probably my big climax chapter.  Then there’ll be the wrap-up to the climax chapter and then the final chapter.

I’m so close I can taste it.  There’s been an attempt on a character’s life and there’s a lot of blood pooling in a location.

How’s that for ominous?  I won’t say whether that attempt was successful.

That’s your update!  I’ll be back by this evening to check in on things over here!

Footloose and Fancy-free Friday 1/8 — January 8, 2010

Footloose and Fancy-free Friday 1/8

Curse school.  I am so not going to have any time to write.  Whatever.

http://widgets.nbc.com/o/4727a250e66f9723/4b46b8fd3eabfc17/4b44f628b6969f67/78d3c57f/-cpid/e47f931f5cb0d1fe

As for school, I do think I’ll enjoy this degree program.  It’s a major paradigm shift for me, mentally.

Wednesday, my instructors kept asking in the classes how many of us there were actually art majors.  My first inclination is still to keep the hand down.  I’m not an art major.  Who am I to think I’m an art major?

Then, I remember that I am, in fact, an art major.  So. weird.

Anyways, this is definitely going to be a different beast than my first two degrees were.  (I only have one paper to write this whole semester.  And it’s only 4 pages long.  Again. so. weird.)  Lots of projects to do.  And I mean lots.  There are habits I have to start developing that will definitely take some time to get established.

When not doing homework, if that ever happens, and not at work I will write.  Most likely that will happen on Sundays.  Oracles Promise will be finished who knows when.  But I do hope to finish it this year.  2010 may not be the year I query on a project, but I will finish this book.  And hopefully pick up on Lodestar again.

That is your post today.  I must go buy my laundry list of art supplies and try to wrap my brain around this whole process.

WiP Wednesdays 1/6 — January 6, 2010

WiP Wednesdays 1/6

So, it’s the first Wednesday of the new year.  It’s the first day of change for me.  New year, new school, new degree, new challenges.
On with the updates!
I finally managed to get back into the swing of things a little.  I’ve officially hit 80% complete on Oracles Promise.  Exciting, I know.
I can’t wait to say I hit 100% complete.  Sigh.
Today is the first day of classes.  I won’t be around to respond to your comments until this evening.
And even then I might be too wiped out to say much of anything.  Let alone try to write.  I’m going to have to revise my writing schedule and just figure that I’ll not get any writing done on Mondays and Wednesdays.  I’ll have limited time to write on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Friday through Sunday, though, will be all mine.  I can write to my heart’s content.
Needless to say the TBR list will continue to grow until I can manage free time to read.
As for the actual book.  I’m working to wrap up the last chapter before my sort of big climax chapter.  There’s going to be the big event that solidifies relationships and acts as the set-up to the culminating events of the major storyline of the book.  There will be loose threads left to continue into book 2, but there will be resolution to some things.  (I hope.)
Friendships are beginning to form, some are becoming even more defined, and things will move quickly to their climax once I finish off this chapter.
There are a couple of reveals that I still need to make.  I’m a bit worried about my pacing on all of the things I’ve revealed.  But I can tweak that as I revise.
If I revise this book.  This book might become the second novel to be put into the proverbial drawer never to be seen again.
That’s all.  Come Friday I’ll report about classes and such.  Hope you all have a great day and I’ll see you on the flip side.
Tantalus Tuesday…er…Thursday — December 31, 2009

Tantalus Tuesday…er…Thursday

Okay, so I realized yesterday morning that I never gave you a Tantalus Tuesday this month.

So, I decided to get it to you on the last Thursday of the month.  (And the last day of the year, too.  Look at that.)

As you read yesterday I’m still not done with Oracles Promise.  But I’m far enough along that I can give you a little teaser from much later in the book than the other teasers have been.

Without further ado…

*redacted*

Well, that’s all for this month and this year.  Until next time.
